(Ebensburg, Pa.) 1867-1938: July 27, 1872 Alexander Johnston, Esq., father of ex-governor William F. Johnston, of this state, died at his residence near Youngstown, Westmoreland county, one day last week at the patriarchal age of 99 years. He was born in the county Fermanagh, Ireland, on the 10th of July 1773, came to the United States in 1797, and being a practical and scientific surveyor, was immediately employed by Gen. Charles Campbell in locating land warrants north and west of the Ohio and Allegheny rivers. He was one of the first sheriffs of Westmoreland county and subsequently filled the offices of Treasurer and Register and Recorder of the county. He voted at every Presidential election except when Washington was chosen. He often said himself that he was present as a child at the parade of the Irish volunteers at Dungannon in 1781. He was the oldest member of the Masonic fraternity in the United States, having become a member of the order in Ireland in the year 1795. He was an honored and an eminently respectable citizen, and was an elegant specimen of the educated and refined "old Irish gentleman."
