The Rev. Joseph Kecskemethy, 89, of Ligonier died Saturday, Nov. 18, 1995, at
home. He was born Aug. 11, 1906, in Canonsburg, the son of the late Joseph and
Elizabeth (Kelemen) Kecskemethy. He was an ordained Reformed minister, who
attended Theological Seminary in Debrecen, Hungary. He held leadership positions
in three major American Hungarian Reformed institutions. He served as a parish
minister for 20 years in Passaic, N.J., and East Chicago, III. In 1944 the
directors of Bethlen Home elected him superintendent of the orphanage, old
people's home and the 215 acre farm in Ligonier Township, a position he held
until 1957. In 1956 he was elected as the Hungarian Reformed Federation's
general and national organizing secretary, a position he held until 1968, when
he returned to his original church in Passaic. In 1992 he returned to Ligonier
until being called "home."
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth
Korocz Kecskemethy, and a sister, Helen Vargovcsik. He is survived by two sons,
Joseph G. of Baden and Stephen Z. of Portland, Maine; six grandchildren, and
three great-grand-children. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Tuesday in McCabe Funeral Home, 244 W. Main St., Ligonier. Funeral service will
be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bethlen Home Chapel, Ligonier Township.
Interment will follow in Ligonier Valley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be
made to Bethlen Home Museum and Archives Fund, PO Box 657, Ligonier, PA 15658.
