(Pittsburgh, Pa.): March 23, 1864 Died at the residence of his parents, near Hillside Station, Westmoreland County, Pa., on Thursday, 3d inst., Joseph S. G. Kern, Jr., in the 18th year of his age. It is with more than ordinary feelings of sorrow that we chronicle the death of this estimable young man and as yet, we can scarcely realize that he is forever removed from our midst. But a few weeks have elapsed since in the fullness of life, of hope and of patriotism he enlisted in company K, 53d Reg. Penn. Veteran Volunteers, of which his father and two elder brothers have been members since its organization in 1861. He was immediately transferred to Camp Copeland, where he contracted measles, which, for want of proper care and treatment while in camp, developed pneumonia, of which he died...
