His death was quite unexpected to his large circle of friends and to the county generally, as on Thursday he had been at his office as usual, looking after his law practice and other business details and being, seemingly, in his customary health. Mr. Latta was born in Unity Township on the fifth of March, 1836, so that he was within a few days of being 77 years of age when death claimed him. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. He received his early education in the township schools, and subsequently attended the Sewickley and Eldersridge Academies. In 1857 he entered upon the study of law in Yale University, and was graduated from that Institution in 1859. The same year he was admitted to the bar of Westmoreland county and was engaged, almost continuously, in the practice of his profession that time until his death. He was elected to the State Senate in 1863 and to the legislature in 1872 and 1873. Two years later he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, and he served in that capacity for four years. In September 1865 he was married to Emma A. Hope, of Uniontown. Three children survive from his marriage: Miss Isabel Latta, of Pleasant Unity; Mrs. W. B. Ryan, of Mexico: and Cuthbert Latta. of Bethlehem. Mrs. Latta died in 1876 and in 1877, Mr. Latta was married to Miss Rose McClellan, of Ludwick. Four children survive from this union; Mrs. Murray Turner, of Hammond, Indiana; Mrs. Richard Jamison, of Greensburg: Pollard, of Greensburg, and Margaret, of Greensburg. The funeral services will be held in Christ Episcopal Church of Greensburg on Monday morning, at 10:30 o’clock.
