(Ebensburg, Pa.) 1867-1938: October 27, 1870 We learn from the Johnstown Echo that John C. Magill, a native of Derry township, Westmoreland county, a resident of Johnstown at various times, and well known in this county, met with a horrible death at Pleasant Hill, Missouri, a few days since. The following are the particulars, as given in the Pleasant Hill Leader: "Last Saturday, Squire Magill, an old and prominent citizen of this city, got into an altercation with a colored man at Chapman's barbershop, which, after passing a few remarks, resulted in the Squire's shooting the colored man in the fleshy part of the leg. On Sunday morning, for some cause or other, not known to us, they met again, at the same place, and renewed the combat, both having pistols, and were no doubt both determined to kill his man. We do not know for certain, but learn that two shots were fired, one taking effect in the main artery in the Squire's thigh. He was then conveyed to the residence of his daughter, where he died from the effects Tuesday about noon. As the facts have not been made public, we forbear publishing any rumors which have been circulated as to the cause of this murder. The colored man was immediately arrested and locked up in the calaboose, where he remained until Wednesday, when he was taken to Harrisonville and locked up in the county jail to await further trial."
