Ankney, 102, of Melcroft, (formerly of Cook township), died Tuesday, May 24, 1994, in Laural Highlands Residential Care Home. He was born March 3, 1892, in Rector, a son of the late Oak and Nettie (Buell) Ankney. Prior to his retirement, he was a self-employed farmer and lumberman for more than 40 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Johnson Ankney; a sister Edna Snyder, and two brothers, Lloyd and Gary Ankney. Bitner, a native of Ligonier Valley and who always lived in the valley excepting a few years in Latrobe, a veteran of the Civil War who served nearly three years in the service, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 15, 1920, at 3:15 o'clock, of acute indigestion causing heart failure. He had been in rather delicate health for some time but was able to walk about town. He was aged 76 years, 5 months and 10 days. He died at his home on West Main street. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Clarence of Pittsburgh, and Daniel O. of Johnstown, and by one daughter, Miss Della, at home, a successful school teacher of Allegheny county, and by two grandchildren. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 in St. James Lutheran Church of which he was a lifelong and faithful member, conducted by Rev. L. J. Baker, pastor of the Latrobe Lutheran church, assisted by Rev. A. L. Kenyon, pastor of the local U. P. church. Thirteen of the Civil War veterans attended the services in the church and accompanied the body to its last resting place. The interment was made in the Valley cemetery near Ligonier. Bossart, Paul (Source: Latrobe Bulletin (Latrobe, Pennsylvania)) Paul Bossart, nonagenarian and life long resident of Unity township, died at 6 o'clock on Wednesday morning, Feb. 20, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Strickler of near Bradenville. Mr. Bossart was 90 years, 3 months and 27 days old and had been in failing health months before his death. Mr. Bossart was born in Unity township and spent practically his whole life in the vicinity of Youngstown. He was a bricklayer by trade. Mrs. Bossart died May 30, 1916. Several weeks ago she fell in stepping out of the door of her home, fracturing her hip. Owing to her advanced age death resulted. The funeral services were held today. Foster, William Clark (Source: Latrobe Bulletin (Latrobe, Pennsylvania) · 19 Aug 1948, Thu · Page 7) William Clark Foster, of First Ave., Derry, died at Latrobe Hospital at noon yesterday of complications following a months illness. Mr. Foster was a life long resident of Derry. A son of the late William and Martha Thomas Foster, he was born there June 23, 1872. He entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a brakeman February 5, 1892. In 1900 he was promoted to flagman and in 1906 was made a freight conductor at which position he worked until Feb. 10, 1941, when he retired after 49 years of service. He belonged to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Knights of Malta. He was a member of the Derry Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on the council of the congregation for several years. His wife, Mrs. Minnie Baer Foster died May 30, 1942 and a son, Lewis, died August 28, 1941. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Forsha, of Derry; a son, George Foster, of Derry; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and the following sisters: Mrs. William Lowman and Mrs. John Baker, Derry; Mrs. James Alms, of Wilkinsburg; and Mrs. Alice Hoyle, Marianna. Graver, Jr., Frederick C (Source: Latrobe Bulletin (Latrobe, Pennsylvania) · 13 Mar 1968, Wed · Page 1) A young man from Ligonier died today as a result of injuries he sustained in a single car accident on Route 30 early Saturday morning. The victim was Frederick C. Graver. Jr., 21, of Bunger St. who succumbed at 12:45 am at Latrobe Hospital. The Westmoreland County Coronor's office attributed his death to a severe fractured skull and multiple abrasions after being thrown from his 1953 sedan when it crashed at approximately 2:10 am Saturday. He and a passenger, Robert E. Roberts, also 21, were heading home at the time of the accident. Roberts was not injured. Born November 30, 1946, Graver is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Graver, Sr., and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Berkey and Mrs. Robert Taylor, both of Ligonier. A 1966 graduate of Ligonier High School, he was employed by the A. R. Graver Construction Co. of Ligonier and a member of the Church of the Brethren, Waterford. Services will be held at 11 am Friday in charge of Rev. Dale Rummell, pastor of the Brethern church. Interment will follow in Menoher Memorial cemetery. Griffith, Mrs. C. C. She was married to C. C. Griffith July 3rd, 1873. This union was blessed with eight children: Mrs. Alva McKelvey, of Wilkinsburg; and Mrs. Anna M. Smith, of East End, Pittsburg; Robert, Emma, Harry, Edna and Louis, all of Ligonier; one child dying in infancy. Services were held in the Lutheran church and a memorial sermon preached by her pastor, Rev. H. L. McMurray, and to a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors. Griffith, of McColly St., died in the Winber hospital on Saturday evening, September 24, 1927. She had undergone an operation for the removal of a goitre on Thursday and was getting along nicely until Friday evening when her condition became very serious, causing her death the following evening. She was aged 56 years and 25 days. She is survived by her husband, J. S. Griffith, and the following children: Mary Griffith a teacher in the Wilkinsburg schools; Mrs. L. W. Guild, of New Bedford, Mass; Sarah Jane Griffith, at home; Harry N. and John, both of Ligonier. Kuhns, a well known resident of Youngstown, died yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, in the St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh, to which place he had been taken five weeks ago for treatment. Mr. Kuhns was suffering from paralysis of the swallowing mussels. He suffered from a similar attack five years ago, but his case responded to treatment. Several weeks ago the illness again affected him and he was removed to the St. Francis Hospital, where his death occurred. Mr. Kuhns was a son of the late Isaac Kuhns and a lifelong resident of Youngstown. For 10 years or more he was in the employ of Dr. Joseph E. Peebles of Ligonier street. She was found by her husband lying in the yard. Mrs. Kuhns was upwards of 70 years of age. All their married life she and her husband had lived upon the farm where her death occurred. She is survived by the husband, also by three sons, five daughters and a number of grandchildren. The three sons surviving are: John, of Punxutawney; and Jacon and Worth, both of whom live on farms near their father's. While at work drawing ribs or "stumps" a mass of roof fell and Kuhns was crushed beneath tons of rock and slate. Mr. Mayhew was also struck by the mass and injured. When Kuhns' body was found beneath the mass it was crushed almost flat. James Kuhns, aged 19 years and 5 months, was left fatherless almost 15 years ago. He leaves a mother, two sisters and two brothers and many relatives to mourn his untimely death. After the death of his father, his grandmother, Rachel Kuhns, took him to her heart and home who taught him the way of life. Under her influence she had him baptized and join M. P. church at Solomon's Temple. After his grandmothers death some six years ago, he had a home with his uncle, Henry Kuhns, and with his cousin, Mrs. Samuel Keltz. His death was caused from excitement. During the afternoon of his death he was engaged in dragging a field with a four-horse team when they became frightened and ran away. Mr. Kuhns went to the house and complained he was not feeling well. He sat down and his wife began the preparation of the evening meal. When it was ready she went to call him just as he gasped a couple times for breath and espired. He was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., January 2, 1839, and had been married three times, his first and second wives being dead. By his first marriage, thirteen children were born, and by his second marriage, two. The deceased came to Iowa and located in Jasper county, and from there came to near Nevinville. He has been living near Adrian, Mo., for few years. The deceased, a son of the late Henry and Mary Kuhns, was born in Ligonier Valley. At the age of 31 he went west to Portland, Oregon, where he became engaged as a contractor, and continued in that capacity for 30 years. Following the death of his wife, he returned to Ligonier Valley, where for the past 20 years he had made his home with his two sisters, on the old Kuhns homestead near Oak Grove. Mr. Kuhns was an ardent lover of baseball. Even at his advanced age, few games were played in Ligonier Valley that Mr. Kuhns did not attend. Mrs. McDowell was born May 10, 1851, in Cook township, this county. In 1870 she was married to Mr. K. A. McDowell of the same township and took up their home within its bounds. Surviving Mrs. McDowell are the following: her husband, two brothers, Reuben McKlveen of near Pleasant Grove church and William McKlveen of Canada; ten children: John H. McDowell of Ligonier and Miss May Matilda McDowell of Ligonier; Harry M. of Latrobe; Mrs. L. T. Martin of Ligonier; Mrs. B. D. Sibel of Greensburg; G. A. McDowell of Greensburg; Mrs. H. M. Cramer, Ligonier; C. A. McDowell of Latrobe; Mrs. Charles D. Patton of Greensburg; and Roy McDowell of Greensburg. One son, Denny C. had preceded the mother to his rest. Also surviving the beloved mother are 25 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. McKelvey, of Pittsburgh, died Monday, October 19th, at the West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, of pneumonia. Mr. McKelvey was vice president of the Exchange National Bank, of Pittsburgh, and had been associated with the bank for the past 22 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alma McKelvey, and two sons, Willard H. McKelvey and Arthur G. McKelvey, also by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. John Bottomer, of Pittsburgh; Mrs. John Shaffer, of Braddock; Mrs. James Gross, of Ligonier; Matthew McKelvey, of Frederick, Ohio; Mrs. Robert Johnson, of Cook township; and Smith McKelvey, of Braddock. Mr. McKelvey was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William McKelvey. He was born in Ligonier township near the Reed school house where he gained his early education. He went to Westminster College for one semester, but was forced to leave school on account of the death of his father. Mr. McKelvey then became a clerk in the Jacob Keffer clothing store at Ligonier. Later he took a business course and still later he became P.R.R. ticket agent at Pittsburgh. He continued in the latter employment until he turned to banking. McKelvey, deceased, died at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Alta M. Gross, Tuesday afternoon, March 25, of heart failure. She became seriously ill just two hours before death came. Two daughters were by her side, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Gross. Deceased was born March 22, 1839, and was aged 74 years and 3 days. She survived her husband 22 years. Mitchell, 27 year old Ligonier township World War II veteran, who was instantly killed Tuesday while working on a coal stripping project in Mt. Pleasant township. Mitchell, employed by the Latrobe Construction Co., was called to the stripping job to repair a broken truck axle and was removing the wheel from the truck when a bulldozer operating nearby got too close and crushed him between the two vehicles. Joseph Check, Westmoreland Co. coroner, said Mitchell died of a fractured skull and shock. John and Frank Dominick and Earl Horner, fellow workers, were first on the scene. Mitchell's body was first taken to the Cease Funeral Home in Pleasant Unity and later moved to the Roy E. Sibel Funeral Home here. Ross, of Lehmar avenue. Last Tuesday night, a little child was born in the Ross home. The mother was suffering from a cold at te time, but she seemed to be getting along nicely until Thursday evening, when pneumonia developed. Her condition, however, was not viewed as serious until yesterday morning, when she became much worse. Mrs. Ross would have been 19 years of age on the 4th of October. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Doran, of Latrobe, and was married to Mr. Ross about a year ago. She is survived by her husband and the little babe. Mr. Ross' three sons also mourn her loss. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Doran, and four sisters: Mrs. Spanger, Myrtle, Violet and Eleanor, are the surviving members of her family. Prior to retirement in 1972, Eugene was employed by Standard Steel in Latrobe for over 30 years. The oldest member of St. James Lutheran church of Youngstown, where he was confirmed November 30, 1879, he is survived by three sons: J. L. Shirey, of South Connellsville, R. E. Shirey, of Jeannette, and Raymond H. Shirey, of Latrobe RD 1. He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte, and four children: A. Bert; Logan A.; Emory D. and Grethel V. There are also 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. The body was taken to the Gosnell funeral home and at 1:15 pm Friday it will be removed to the Youngstown Lutheran church where a service will be conducted at 2:30 pm in charge of Rev. Dr. Bruce R. Mrs. Smith had been active until a month ago when she suffered a broken hip and was hospitalized. Her husband, Cyrus W. Smith, preceded her in death in 1910. She has been a life-long resident of Latrobe and vicinity. The following children survive: Harry E. Smith, San Fernando, Calif.; Mrs. John (Mary) Huffman, New Kensington; Paul and Theron C. She and her husband had the Oldsmobile-Chevrolet Agency in Latrobe for 27 years, retiring in 1950. She was "Woman of the Year" in Latrobe in 1956. She is survived by her husband, Theron C. (Source: Press of Atlantic City, The (NJ) - Monday, December 16, 1996) Louis W. Young, 86, of Somers Point, died Sunday at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point. Mr. Young owned and operated Young's Flower Shop and Greenhouse in Latrobe, Pa., for more than 45 years, and was more recently president of Floral Events in Linwood. He was an avid gardener. Born in Latrobe, Mr. Young lived in Somers Point for the last 20 years. Surviving are one son, Bob Young, with whom he worked; one daughter, Aletha J. Young, with whom he lived; one brother, Frederick G. of Latrobe, Pa.; and one sister, Miriam Yanik of Chicago. Services will be held 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Jeffries & Keates Funeral Home, Tilton Road and Infield Avenue, Northfield. Burial will be Thursday in Bethel Cemetery, Cook Township, Pa. Young, Robert C. (Source: Press of Atlantic City, The (NJ) - Friday, February 18, 2000) Robert C. Young., (Bob), 61, of Somers Point, died at home on Tuesday, February 15, 2000, after losing a battle with cancer caused in part by smoking. He was born in Latrobe, PA, where he was raised in the family floral business. After working the summer season at the shore, he got "sand in his shoes" and moved here in the late fifties. He worked at the Marlboro Blenheim as a waiter, bartender, and built and designed their floats for the Miss America Parade. During this time, he wintered in Florida, working at the Bellevue Biltmore in Bel Aire, where he designed nightclub stages. A career move was made to Zaberers Restaurant on the Black Horse Pike where he was Front of the House Manager, and was in charge of all catering and banquet functions for 15 years. Leaving Zaberers, he changed careers again, moving from roast beef to roses, and returned to the floral industry in this area. In 1987, following participation in a Master Class with European designers in Vienna, the American Institute of Floral Designers certified him in floral design. He was the current president of the Northeast Region of AIFD; he chaired their national awards committee and their national symposium in Boston in 1998. He was past chair of the FTD Local District. Bob was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Absecon, where he had served as President of Council. Mr. Young was active in many local events, giving his time and talent generously; he participated in lecture series held in The Ruth Neuman Shapiro Showhouse, Manna, South Jersey Aids Alliance, his presence was very much a part of Atlantic City. His most recent enterprise was "Floral Events" in Linwood, where he created floral decor for parties, weddings and casino work. Hundreds of area brides have walked down the aisle carrying his signature bouquets. His mother, Mary and his father, Louis, predeceased Mr. Young. His sister, Aletha is at home. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Friday, February 18, 7-9 PM at Jeffries & Keates Funeral Home, Tilton Rd & Infield Ave., Northfield. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 19, 11AM at the Grace Lutheran Church, 11 E. Dawes Avenue, Somers Point. Burial private.
