REED, BUSINESSMAN, DIES AT 88 S.P. Reed, 88, one of Latrobe's pioneer businessmen, died at 9:45 a.m. today at the Latrobe Hospital after an illness of approximately three weeks. Born Sept. 19, 1867, Mr. Reed began his expansive business career at the age of 12 when he became affiliated with the Peter's Paper Co. at Kingston. In 1883 he joined the W.S. Head Co., which was located in a three story brick building where the Mellon National Bank now stands, remaining with this company until 1892. He left Latrobe in 1892 when he secured employment with the Joseph Horne Co., Pittsburgh. RETURNS FROM PITTSBURGH In 1895, he returned to Latrobe and beam associated with the John B. Anderson Co., situated at the site of the present Lowenstein building on Depot ST. In 1899 he became on of the co-founders of McLaughlin and Reed, a department store which occupied part of the building now used by Miller and Bigg Co. Assuming full control in 1913, Mr. Reed changed the name of the store to "S.P. Reed Department Store." In this same year, Mr. Reed and A.E. Troutman, Greensburg department store owner, combined their stores and later purchased four more in Connellsville, Butler, Indiana and DuBois, each of which is an outstanding establishment in its community. This chain of stores later was named Allied Stores Co. BUILDING ERECTED IN 1925 Because growing business required expansion, the present building in Latrobe was erected in 1925, thereby providing three times as much floor space as the former structure. Until hilliness forced hi to remain at home, Mr. Reed displayed an active interest in the business, reporting to work daily. He relinquished direct control of he business in 1935 when he trued over the duties to his son, Harry P. Reed, current managing director of the Allied Stores Co. One of Mr. Reed's favorite pastime was to chat with the many patrons whom he considered had helped him to achieve success in the community. CHURCH, LODGE CONNECTIONS He was an elder of the United Presbyterian Church, Latrobe; a member of the Loyalhanna Lodge F& AM; a director of the Latrobe Community Loan Co, and a retired member of the Latrobe Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie P. Huffman Reed; a son, Harry P. Reed, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Reed Reeves, both of Latrobe; three grandchildren and a great grandchild. Friends will be received at the Joseph R. Hunter Funeral Home, Latrobe. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Unity Chapel with Mr. Reed's close friend, the Rev. Chester Clark, assistant pastor of the Latrobe Methodist Church, in charge. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, LATROBE BULLETIN front page & pg 12, December 31, 1955.
