Schmucker World War II Veteran, Former Business Owner Donald A. Schmucker, 90, of Derry, formerly of Latrobe, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, at his residence. Born Aug. 4, 1923, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late John T. Schmucker Sr. and Frances H. Ebersberger Schmucker. Donald was a member of St. Martin Church, New Derry, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, a past member of the Parish Council and a member of the Holy Name Society. From 1959 to 1979, he was the owner and operator of Lincoln Lanes, Unity Township. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U. S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was a member of American Legion Thomas B. Anderson Post 515, VFW Paul Lizza Post 3414 and FO Eagles Tony Angelo Aerie 01188, all of Latrobe, and the BPO Elks Lodge 406 of Blairsville. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed bowling and golfing. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas William Schmucker and Martin Joseph Schmucker; three brothers, John Jr., Gerald and Simon Schmucker, and two sisters, Vivian Cogan and Martha Flowers. Donald is survived by his wife, Theresa Kahler Schmucker of Derry; four sons, James A. Schmucker of Derry, Brian A. Schmucker and his wife, Kathy, of Derry, Wayne E. Schmucker and his wife, Tracy, of Blairsville and Phillip M. Schmucker of Derry; four daughters, Donna M. Levy and her husband, Alan, of Alameda, California, Irene F. McFadden and her husband, Kurt, of Pittsburgh, Linda A. Poliacek and her husband, John, of Latrobe and Cathy A. McKelvy and her husband, Jay, of South Euclid, Ohio; a brother, David Schmucker and his wife, Karen, of Tennessee; a sister, Mary Jo Caruso and her husband, Don, of Trafford; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends were received 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in John J. Lopatich Funeral Home Inc., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass was celebrated 11 a.m. Monday in St. Martin Church, New Derry, with the Rev. Stephen C. West as celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary Cemetery, Unity Township. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Family Hospice and Palliative Care of Pittsburgh for their care and compassion.
