George Westley Shirey, 90 years old, a retired farmer of Youngstown, Westmoreland
county, died at 9 pm Tuesday, at the Baum Rest Home at Pleasant Unity. The oldest
member of St. James Lutheran church of Youngstown, where he was confirmed November
30, 1879, he is survived by three sons: J. L. Shirey, of South Connellsville, R. E.
Shirey, of Jeannette, and Raymond H. Shirey, of Latrobe RD 1. He was preceded in
death by his wife Charlotte, and four children: A. Bert; Logan A.; Emory D. and
Grethel V. There are also 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and 8 great
great grandchildren. The body was taken to the Gosnell funeral home and at 1:15 pm
Friday it will be removed to the Youngstown Lutheran church where a service will be
conducted at 2:30 pm in charge of Rev. Dr. Bruce R. Shaffer, pastor. Burial will be
made in the church cemetery.
