Showalter, 96, of Latrobe, passed away on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, at Independence Health System Latrobe Hospital. Born Nov. 13, 1928, in Latrobe, he was the son of the late Clarence E. and Ruth (MacMillan) Showalter. Ed was a member of the Latrobe United Presbyterian Church. He enlisted in the regular Army in 1946 at the age of 17 and served in the Far East with the Army of Occupation in Japan from 1946 through 1948 with G. Company 27th Wolfhound Regiment, 25th 'Tropic Lightning' Infantry Division. An expert rifleman, he was a member of the 25th Division Track Team running in the Far East Championship in the Me Ji Stadium, Tokyo. He returned to the States in 1948 and joined the Engineer Reserves Corps. Ed was recalled to active duty in 1950 during the Korean War. He served with the 986th Engineer Petrol Distribution Company as a wheeled vehicle mechanic stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Fort Dix, NJ. He was discharged in Sept. 1951 and enrolled in California State Teachers College, where he graduated in 1955. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he taught industrial arts in the Greater Latrobe School District and previously in the United School District. While teaching, Ed also coached rifle, cross country, and track and field at various times. Working his way through the chairs, Ed was a member of American Legion Post No. 515 and served as Commander in 1972. His service to the Post included, at various times, color guard, funeral detail, board of directors, house committee, and historian. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 3414. Ed enjoyed woodworking, always having a project going in his basement woodshop, and history of all kinds, especially genealogy. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Giffen) Showalter; a son, Michael E. Showalter; a brother, William A. Showalter Sr.; and a sister, Nancy Thompson. Ed is survived by four sons, Timothy M. Showalter and his wife, Annette, of Latrobe, Daniel C. Showalter and his wife, Susan, of Vancouver Island, Edward G. Showalter of Latrobe, and Matthew Q. Showalter and his wife, Diane, of Latrobe; two daughters, Patricia A. Hauser and her husband, Joseph, of Latrobe and Kathleen R. Stein and her husband, Matthew, of Latrobe; eight grandchildren, Nikki Speer (John), Katie Showalter, Michael Showalter, Erik Showalter (Morgan), Charlie Hauser (Wade Flickinger), Samantha Keefer (Robert), Luke Stein, and Jack E. Stein; five great-grandchildren, Ramsey, Wolfgang, Everly, Easton, and Camden; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Services and interment are private.
