Washnock Whitney James T. "Tom" Washnock, 88, of Whitney, died peacefully Thursday, July 26, 2012, at home, after a long and courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), with his loving family at his bedside. He was born in Whitney, June 2, 1924, a son of the late John and Augusta (Houck) Washnock. Tom was a proud World War II veteran, having served in the Navy upon graduation from Latrobe High School in 1943, until the end of the war aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Bataan. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Latrobe, and was a life member of American Legion Post 515 and the BPO Elks. Tom was former president and partners with his brothers in the Whitney Manufacturing Co. Inc., having worked for 60 years in the family business. Tom, along with two other veterans, William Banks and Ted Wensing, raised the money and built the Veterans Memorial in Whitney, of which he was very proud. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Melvin Washnock, on Dec. 12, 2010; four sisters, Ann Bridge, Mae Washnock, Henrietta Stewart and Betty Marks; and five brothers, Paul, Jack, Michael, William and Donald Washnock. Tom is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dixie Marks Washnock; a daughter, Peggy Knauff and husband, Rex, of Mt. Pleasant; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Buchanan and husband, Rick, of Whitney, and Dona Werner, of Latrobe; a stepson, Robert Werner and wife, Donna, of Latrobe; seven grandchildren, Rex, Tom and Stephen Knauff; Crystal Hunter and husband, Josh, of Ligonier, Sierra Ellis, of Latrobe, Blaise Werner, of Latrobe, and Sean Newhouse, of Whitney; three great-grandchildren, Joseph and Micaylah Knauff, of Ligonier, and Brandon Newhouse; a sister, Frieda Nehls, of Latrobe; nieces and nephews; and his loving grand-puppy, Lilly, who gave him pure and unconditional love every day. Honoring Tom's request, his body has been donated to medical science for research, hopefully to help find a cure for this cruel and terrible disease. As he always gave and helped his fellow man in life, he chose to also help in death. Family and friends will be received from 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, until the time of a memorial service and celebration of Tom's life at 11 a.m. in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Mission Road, Latrobe, with Pastor William Schaefer officiating. Military services will also be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with American Legion Post 515 and VFW Post 3414. Following the services, family and friends are invited to join the family at a luncheon to be held at DeNunzio's Restaurant at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, Route 981, Latrobe. For those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association, Western Pennsylvania Chapter, 416 Lincoln Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15209, in Tom's name for research. A special thank you to Excela Health Hospice, particularly Connie Vella, Mary Ellen Davin and Pat Petrarca.
