West, 74, of Latrobe died Monday, April 17, 2000, in Barnes House, Derry Township. He was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Latrobe, a son of the late John and Mae (Alexander) West. Bill began a teaching career in the Ligonier School District from 1950 until 1960, teaching history and English, and coaching basketball. He then came to the Latrobe School District as a teacher, track, field and cross-country coach. He retired in 1987 as the home school visitor and faculty manager. He also had been a widely known PIAA official in both basketball and football. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a tail gunner with the U.S. Army Air Forces, and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Unity Township, and the Thomas B. Anderson American Legion Post 515. Bill also served as the program director for Latrobe Parks and Recreation for over 25 years, and was a former board member of the Latrobe Little League. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Athalene Hays West, April 15, 1992; three brothers, Kenneth, Joseph B. and John "Hap," and his sister, Annabelle Young. He is survived by two sons, W. Robert (and his wife, Michele) and Raymond Victor (and his wife, Elizabeth), all of Latrobe; four grandchildren, Amy, Scott, Neal and Jordann West, and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home Inc., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Unity Township, with the Rev. William E. Ordelt Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Stahlstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1325 Mission Road, Latrobe, PA 15650.
