Hughes Whalen, 95, formerly of Tacoma Avenue, Latrobe, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1986. Born Oct. 12, 1890, in Northern Ireland, she was a daughter of the late Mark and Mary O'Hanlon Hughes. She was a member of one of the first graduating classes of Westmoreland Hospital School of Nursing, Greensburg. For many years she was employed as a nurse by the state Public Health Department. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, and the parish Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She also was a member of the Quota Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Leo Whalen, Sept. 15, 1981; six brothers, Thomas Hughes, who died in Northern Ireland, and Michael F., John J., Frank, Henry and Dr. Patrick Hughes, and two sisters, Mimmie McKewon and Bridget Quinn, both of whom died in Northern Ireland. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in John J. Lopatich Funeral Home, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, with Monsignor Paul M. Lackner as celebrant. Interment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
