[Translated from Bible published in Nurnberg in 1770 belonging to Dewalt 
Schnider.  Presented to the York Historical Society through the courtesy of 
the Rev. Sanderson Jacobs by Lawrence Bortner, 1201 York Street, Hanover, PA.]

On April 20th, 1748 did I Dewalt Schnider come into this world.  [He died on 
August 17, 1821]

On December 1772 did I enter Holy Matrimony with Margaret Schwartzin.  On 
December 9th, 1750 came my wife into this world.  Her name was Margaret 
Schwartzin.

On October 28th, 1773 did my son come into this world and he was named Andreas 
when received Holy Baptismal in the presence of his Godfather on October 
30th.  [Andreas Schwarts]

On March 1775 did my daughter come into this world and she received the name 
Cadarina during Holy Baptismal.  Godfather and Godmother were Heinrich Menge 
and his Wife, Caterina on May 29th.  

On the 7th of February 1777 did my two sons come into this world.  The names 
which they received in the Holy Baptismal were Johan Peter and the other 
Johannes.  The Godfather of Johan Peter is the Frantz Causs and of the other 
Johannes Stahl and his wife Lehna, baptized on the 16th of February.  

On April 27th, 1779 was my son [Abraham] born into this world and a name was 
given to him in the Holy Baptismal on the 16th of May, 1779.  God parents were 
Abraham Schwartz single and Juliann single.

On 2nd of July 1781 my daughter was born into this world and the name Margrat 
was given her in the Holy Baptismal.  Godparents were Conrad Schwartz and his 
wife Dorethe, was baptized on 19th August 1781.

On 10th of July 1783 my son was born into this world and received the name 
George during the Holy Baptismal.  Godfather was Johannes Gantz, single.  
Baptized on 17th August, 1783.

On April 20th, 1785 my daughter was born into this world and received the name 
Annamair.  Godmother at the Holy Baptismal was Catharine Schwartzin, single on 
May 1st, 1785.  

On July 19, 1787 my daughter was born into this world and her name was given 
her during the Holy Baptismal [Lisal ?] Margred.  Godparents were Georg 
Bortner, Junior and his wife.  Margred was brought to Holy Baptismal on August 
18th, 1787.

On the 4th of March 1798 did I enter holy matrimony with Annmarina Stein.  Her 
father’s name was Jacob Stein and the mother Annamarina.

On the 17th of April 1776 was my wife born into this world and her name was 
Annamarina Stein.  Her father was Jacob Stein and the mother Annamarina.

March 12, 1840 George Bortner and Maryan Snyder was joined together in Holy 
Matrimony.

George Bortner was born the 17th of March 1807.

Maryan Snyder was born the 24th of February, 1806, was baptized the 6th day of 
April, 1806.

Elias S. Bortner was born the 7th day of August, 1841 and was baptized 10 
[19?] of September, 1841.

Maryan Bortner was born the 12th day of November, 1844 and was baptized 7 of 
December, 1844.

Jacob S. Bortner was born the 5 day of October, 1846 and was baptized 7 day of 
November, 1846.

George S. Bortner was born the 30th of March 1849 and was baptized 19th day of 
May 1849.

bought this Bible for 3 pounds.

To this Bible here I say
When somebody wants to carry me away
I tell him, nay!
Here I must stay
And show the way 
To Dewald Schneider
And his Family, yea!
My leaving here, do not request
This is my Duty!  Here I rest
For I am Dewald Schneider’s guest.
		or
Do not steal me, do not wrong!
To Dewald Schneider, I belong.
