He attended the public schools of York. At eighteen years of age he began the mercantile business in York, and for many years he was one of the prominent merchants of the county, and continued in business until a short time before his death, having accumulated quite a fortune. He was married September 20, 1866, to Susan Hay, a native of York and a daughter of John and Susan Hay; no children were born unto them. For many years he was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was extensively known and a much respected citizen. His death occurred October 24, 1878.
