He passed his boyhood in attending school in winter and assisting on the farm in summer. His mother died in 1862, and his father in 1873. In 1864 he assumed charge of the homestead, which comprises 123 acres and contains a good house and barn, and is now the property of his two sisters and himself. In 1862 he married Catherine, daughter of Jonas Huntsberger, of Monaghan Township. Five children were born to this union; of these, three are living: Abraham Huntsberger, Arthur Eugene and John Newton Patterson. They have also one adopted daughter, Minnie Dehia, aged about eighteen. Mr. and Mrs. Fleming have been members of the Church of God at Mt. Pleasant since 1861.
