Battey Publishing Co., 1886. _______________________________________________ Part II, Biographical Sketches, Manchester Township, Pg 135 SAMUEL GROSS, the second of six children of John and Barbara (Melhorn) Gross, was born May 25, 1813, in Manchester Township, on the old homestead farm where he was reared. His first wife was Susan Wolf. Six children were born to them: Mary, Amanda, John, George, Emma and Susan (deceased). His second wife was Lena Gotwalt, daughter of John and Catherine (Wilt) Gotwalt of Dover Township. One child was born to this marriage – Alice S. Mr. Gross and family are members of the Lutheran Church, of Manchester. Mr. Gross’ ancestors were among the first settlers of Manchester Township. They came to the neighborhood of Manchester 110 years ago, and their descendants in Manchester Township have always been upright, honorable men and good citizens.
