HERMAN was born in York in 1851, and is a son of Rutter and Mary C. (Strickler) Herman, of German descent. The family is one of the oldest in York Borough. W. H. Herman received a good academical and high school education, and then served an apprenticeship of three years in A. B. Farquhar's machine shops. He next learned the art of printing under Hiram Young, of York, finishing at the office of the Lancaster Inquirer. Returning to York in 1876, he established a job-printing office, the first in the borough, and has established a fine trade. In 1880 he married Annie L. Heckert, of York. Mr. and Mrs. Herman are connected with the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Herman is choir-leader.
