MURPHY is a son of Joseph and Alice (Cunningham) Murphy, natives of York County, Penn. His grandfather, Joseph Murphy, came from Ireland in 1794. Our subject was born on the old Murphy homestead, January 13, 1848, where he now lives. At the death of his mother, in 1877, he purchased the home farm. In 1870 he engaged in the mercantile business, and since 1877 has been engaged in farming, in connection with that business. He was married on February 12, 1874, to Miss Sarah Gemmill, daughter of Robert Gemmill. They have two children: Robert E. and Joseph R. In 1882 Mr. Murphy was elected school director for three years. He and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church.
