The men of York performed their part well at home and on the battle field during the 
trying years of the Revolutionary war, which lingered on with its terrible hardships 
to the American soldiers, with alternate victory and defeat, in ever memorable 
battles, until the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to Gen. Washington, at Yorktown, 
Va., on the 19th of October, 1781, caused hostilities to cease, producing universal 
joy.  This news was received at York with great rejoicings, business was suspended, 
bells were rung, and a great bonfire built.
