The name of Glades was given to it seventy years ago, by travelers going from York to the river on account of it being an open passage or space, in what was then a forest for miles around. This region now covers an area of about one mile and a quarter by fourteen miles wide, and contains about thirty houses, with a brick schoolhouse, one store, one blacksmith and wagon-maker shop, and one cigar manufactory.
