The Hanover Gas Company received its charter January 8, 1870, and the works were 
built in the summer of the same year, by John L. Kuehn, of York, along the 
Littlestown Railroad, near the depot.  Capt. A. W. Eichelberger, was elected 
president, and L. F. Melsheimer, secretary, at the time of the organization; 
both have remained continuously in office to this writing.  The other directors 
are George N. Forney, R. M. Wirt, John R. Stine, Stephen Keefer and H. Y. 
Sprenkle.  The company consumes about 250 tons of bituminous coal in a year in 
the manufacture of gas, which is furnished at $3 per thousand cubic feet.  There 
are now about 200 consumers.
