For a period of half a century Lewisberry became a great center of trade and several stores prospered; among the names of many persons who engaged in the mercantile business down to date are Lewis & Harlan, Hugh Foster, William Nichols, Elijah Garretson, Lewis Meridith, William P. Nebinger, Joseph Updegraff, M. G. Einstine, George Blymire, Herman Kirk, R. T. Starr and John Meisenhelter.
