This diary is not as detailed as the other.) WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 1868 Was at Baltimore in forenoon. Raining all forenoon about two inches of snow and mud on pavement which makes it very disagreeable to be out. Stores most all closed. Left Baltimore at three o'clock, got to York at 7 in the evening. Nothing going on at York. Bot a pair of gum shoes at York. Have started a regular diary today. THURSDAY, JANUARY 2, 1868 Came home this morning, found all well. Nancy and Cordie were at York today. Rained in afternoon. Joe Bucher was here all last night and all day today. Saw Munson in eve. TUESDAY, MAY 5, 1868 One of Christ Burg's boats arrived this morning. Commenced loading about noon. Bot of Starkweather & Munson. Cloudy, damp day. Burg came (also) himself at noon. At theatre in eve. Bot some flooring and weather.2 WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 1868 Was looking at them loading all day. Rain showers & cloudy all day. Left Williamsport about midnight for home. Was in theatre. MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 1868 Left home at four o'clock for the West. Dannie, Mary, Leber, & self. Got to Harrisburg about 10 o'clock. Left Harrisburg at 12 at night, got to Altoona at daylight, to Pittsburg about 9. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1868 Got to Pittsburg about 9 o'clock, left again soon after. Stopped for dinner at Alliance, at Crestline for supper. Cars very much crowded, could not get into a sleeping car. Travelled all night, felt very sleepy. Rained in (fast) part of day, after noon cloudy. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1868 Arrived at Chicago this morning about six o'clock. Took train about nine o'clock for Milwaukee, got to Milwaukee in time for dinner. Nice day. All very well, but sleepy. Left Milwaukee at nine o'clock for Madison, got to Madison about 2 o'clock. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1868 Met Bahn this morning & Hattie. Nice clear day, cool. Took a walk around town. Left Madison at noon for Lodi, got to Lodi about six o'clock. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1868 Bahn, Leber, & self went out hunting today. I shot six ducks, 14 or 15 pigeons. All well, except Dannie was sick in eve. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1868 Was out hunting today. I shot 5 chickens, 12 pigeons, and 1 squirrel. Nice day. Chickens not very plenty around this country. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1868 Was at home all day. Cloudy day. Mary was at church. Tolerable nice day. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1868 Were out pickerel fishing at Silver Lak., Caught 11 nice ones, one that weight about 8 lbs. Plenty of pigeons about this place. I caught 4 pickerel. Mary & Hattie had a drive out in the country this afternoon. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1868 Leber left us this morning. Rainy day. Bahn & self were out after squirrel in forenoon. We shot 5 squirrel, one duck, and some pigeons. Pigeons are not very plenty today. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1868 Was out hunting. Very nice day. Shot 3 ducks, 5 squirrel, and two pigeons in forenoon. Not out in afternoon. All well, took a ride in eve. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1868 Was not out gunning today. Women were ironing. Dannie is not quite well. Cloudy day, fog in morning. Bahn was working in his shop. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1868 Bahn & self were out gunning today. We shot 6 squirrel and some ducks. A nice day, all well except Dannie. Think he has catarrh fever.3 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1868 Bahn & self were out after ducks in afternoon. We shot five. Nice day. Got some wild plums. Babe is very sick, had the doctor today. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1868 Was in house nearly all day. Babe is a little better. Nice day. Got a letter from Jane Kerr4 stating that all were well at home. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1868 Was at Bahns' all day. Dannie is getting better. Tuesday, September 15, 1868 Was at Bahns' best part of day nursing Dannie. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1868 Was out gunning today, Bahn & self. Shot 19 ducks and one squirrel. Plenty of ducks here. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1868 Was at Old Bartholomew's for dinner & supper. Had a nice time. All tolerable well. Nice day. Had a hard frost this morning. I seen nearly an eighth of an inch of ice. A great many hop pickers passing through town. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1868 Was at the house nearly all day writing a letter for the Star. Nice day. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1868 Was at Bahns'. All well. Was not out gunning or fishing. Cloudy day and cold. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1868 Was at Bahns' all day, in house most of the time. Cold day. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1868 Was out fishing for pike. Caught 3, one weight about 8 lbs. Only caught three in all. Cold, windy day. Drove out to Silver Lake Crystal. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1868 Was out gunning. Shot some ducks & squirrel. Cold, rough day. All well. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1868 Was out gunning. Shot 13 ducks and four squirrel and 1 pigeon. Cold, windy day. All well. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1868 Was at Bahns' all day. Cloudy day. Mary washing. All well. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1868 Was at Bahns', in house most all day. Mary was ironing. Cold, rough and rough still. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1868 Left Bahns' about 11 o'clock for Mazomanie, enroute for Dosch's. Rained in forenoon, cloudy all day. Went by stage to Mazomanie, by car to Muscoda. Got to Orion about 8 o'clock, found Dosch a little surprised to see Theo & wife & selves. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1868 Pleasant day. Left Dosch's in afternoon for Priscilla. Got to Priscilla about sundown. Found them well and living in a little bit of a house. Tolerable nice day. All well. Nice farming land and good timber between this place and Orion. Wrote a letter to G. K. Shenberger. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1868 Nice day. Theo, Dave & Kincannon & self were out hunting. We shot lots of game. Ducks and squirrel are very plenty. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1868 Very nice day, the warmest day we had yet. Shot 19 squirrel, 5 pheasants, and four or five ducks today. All well. Dannie very good. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1868 Left Pricilla's in forenoon for Dosch on a two-horse wagon, distance about 12 miles. Cloudy and rained in early morning. Had a little rain on the road but cleared off before we got to Dosch. All well except Mary. She has a bad cold and headache. It looks rough in the houses out here. All slept in one room. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1868 Theo & self were out hunting today. I had two shots at a wildcat, but only had No. 4 shot. Knocked the (hair) out of her. Killed quite a lot of game today. Very pleasant day. Boarded at Dosch & slept at a Hotel. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1868 Bahn & self were out hunting. Shot 9 ducks. Nice day. Slept at Dosch's tonight. It looks rough here. Orion is a hard looking place. Has about a dozen houses or sheds. Got a letter from Mrs. Kerr. All well at home. The bottom of Wisconsin River is all quicksand of the finest kind. The sand is always moving. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1868 Life Orion this morning for Madison. Left Mary & Bahns at Dosch's. Fair from Orion to Madison 2.10. Paid boarding at Madison, $5.00. Am sorry since that I left Dosch's. Madison is well situated, but as a town I don't like it. 7 o'clock p.m. I wish I was at Dosch again. I am lonesome. No one here that I know. Went to bed at 12 o'clock. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1868 Very pleasant day, warm. I am tired staying here. Lager beer & rum shops all open and some stores might as well be. Am stopping at the Rasdell House. Later. Am getting a very severe headache and chills. Feel bad. Went to bed at seven o'clock. Thinking of fever and ague. MONDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1868 Fell a little better this mroning. Slept tolerable well. Have a very a bad cold. Went to the depot soon after breakfast and stayed there till the train came in. Met Mary & Bahns at the depot. From there we went to the Meredith House. Dannie has a bad cold again. I am very uneasy about him. Will leave tomorrow for Freeport and then home as soon as he gets better. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1868 Give Bahn good bye this morning and left for Freeport. Went from Madison to Belvidere, where we took dinner. Belvidere is a nice place, good country around it. Got to Freeport about 3 o'clock. Stopped at the Penna. House. Seen Gilbert soon after. Windy and raining. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1868 Gilbert's Got to Freeport about 3 o'clock in afternoon. Stopped at the Penna. House. I got some letters and papers from home. Seen Gilberts in eve. We are going there tomorrow. All well. Dannie has a bad cold. Went to Gilbert's. A rainy day. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1868 Was at Gilbert's this morning. Cloudy & raining with cold wind. Freeport reminds me of York. Gilbert has a nice home. The Fair is in operation here. Mary & Mrs. Gilbert were at the Fair today. I kept Dannie. A nice day but windy. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1868 A big Democratic [Meeting]5 here today. I was at the Fair in forenoon. It is a poor affair. I left in eve for Galena, got to Galena after dark. Saturday, October 10, 1868 Took a look around Galena this morning. Went to some of the lead mines on the hills near town. Left at 2 o'clock for Dubuque Iowa. Got to Dubuque about 6 o'clock. Stoped at Key City House. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1868 Took a look around Dubuque this morning. They have street cars here. I visited some of the lead mines on the hills near the city. A very pleasant day. All saloons and some stores open. Left Dubuque in afternoon for this side of the river where I took a look around Dunseith and then took the cars for Freeport. MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1868 Was in town all day nursing Dannie. Mary was washing. Nice day in forenoon, rained in eve. All well. I am writing a letter for the Star. Game around Freeport is scarce. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1868 Was at Gilbert's nearly all day. Rained all day. Mary was ironing. Cold day. Was in town or at the house most all day. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1868 Large Republican Meeting here today, a very big turnout. Clear day. Mary & Dannie & Mrs. Gilbert were down street to see the procession. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1868 Took the morning train for Thomson. Got to the Mississippi or Savanna about 12 o'clock from the I walked to Thomson, a distance of 10 miles. A very pleasant day. Got to Thomson about 3 o'clock. Went out and shot at some ducks. Stoped at the Thomson Hotel. This is a small village. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1868 Was out gunning all day. Shot 6 ducks and a squirrel. Game is not overly plenty. Came here to shoot geese but found them scarce and far between. Left Thomson for Freeport at 9 o'clock, got to Freeport after one at night. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1868 Was at Gilbert's all day. Am getting anxious to get home. Cloudy, all tolerable well. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1868 Was at Gilbert's all day, in Presbyterian Church in eve. Cloudy, rainy day, cold. Dannie has the hives. Don't think we can leave for home tomorrow. MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1868 Was in Freeport all day. Cloudy day. Got a Draft and letter from Stoner. Dannie is not well. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1868 Left Freeport this morning about 9 o'clock. Clear morning. Dannie is not at all well. Got to Chicago about 3 o'clock. Distance from Freeport 121 miles on the road here. Dannie look so bad that I was afraid that we would have to lay over at Chicago, but a little before we got to Chacago he was better. It rained when we got to Chicago. Left C at 5.15. Got a sleeper car to P but had not much rest. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1868 Took breakfast at Alliance. Dannie fells tolerable well this morning. It is raining. Got to Pitsburg at 11.10 a.m. Raining. Left in short time for Harrisburg. Got to Harris. at 9 o'clock. Dann is perfectly done out. Had a very uneasy ride here on account of him. Would never take such a trip again with a child. Stoped at U. S. Hotel. Have a good warm room and Dann is better. He was very glad when he was in room. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1868 Left Harrisburg at 7.20 this morning for York. Got to York at 9.00. Dannie don't look well. His bowels were bad ever since we left home. Stoped at Kates, found all well and the family increased by a son. Cloudy day. Seen G. Kauffelt, G. Ebert's, & Charly Smith. They told me that Cal. Beverson died today. I am very glad we are so near home. Got home in eve, found all right and fire in the stove. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1868 Went out home in afternoon to fetch in Cordie and Harry. Found old folks all well and pleased. Painters just finishing summer kitchen. Walked home. Nice eve, cold through the day. Sloat about finishing husking corn, has mess, getting better. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1868 Was in office in forenoon, after home. Dannie has catarrh fever. Nice day. One span and a half and the bridge is over. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1868 Was out home today. Nice day. Found all well and well pleased. Summer kitchen is about finished. Dannie is still sick, has fever. MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1868 Left home at 9 o'clock for Williamsport. Mary got a girl this morning. Dannie not any better. Cordie & Harry commenced going to school. Fair from C to W 4.20. Got to Williamsport about seven o'clock. Seen Frank Mann in eve. This place is growing fast. Got $30.00 out of bank over checked. Got to Williamsport about seven o'clock. Seen Starkweather. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1868 Was around Williamsport all day. Did not buy any lumber today. Cold day. Lumber is still as high as ever. Think I will buy from Culver & Barber & Starkweather. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1868 Bought sash, plank, lath, & so forth from Culver, Barber & Co. And boards 4/4 from Starkweather & Co. at 23.00 per m. Tolerable nice day. Was talking to Merriman a long time about buying interest in a saw mill. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1868 Was looking all day for Lehman & Weltzhoffer to come with the boat. Came about six in eve, too late to load any lumber. Very nice day. Left Williamsport for home at half past 9 o'clock, paid boarding $8.00, car fair 4.20 to York. Got to York . . . FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1868 . . . At Four o'clock this morning. Went to Weltzhoffer's and from there home in seven o'clock train. Found all tolerable well. Dannie is better, and Mary's maid getting along fine so far. Was at the office best part of the day. Nice day. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1868 Was in town all day, not doing much. Rained in eve, very stormy Hallowween. Maid we got last Monday is doing very well so far. All well except the cold. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1868 Was in the house nearly all day. Disagreeable day, snowed a little. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1868 Stoner commenced boarding here again. Cold windy day. The carpenters are putting up the last span of the bridge. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1868 Was in town all day. Election day. Election passed of quiet in this place. Very pleasant day, not much doing today. Majority for Grant at this box 9, a gain of three over last election. Activities was up till 12 o'clock. Got news that Grant was elected by large majorities. All republicans jubilant. Nose fiddle out in (Fair). Cops keep dark. Very pleasant night. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1868 In town all day. Election news good. Not doing much, weather pleasant, money is getting tight. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1868 Was in town all day. Nice day. They put the last span of the bridge up today. Not doing much in office Budding, Shenberger & self getting up a salt river ticket. Loadened car. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1868 In town in forenoon. Afternoon George Kauffelt & self were out gunning. Brought carriage and horse home. I shot 4 rabits, Kauffelt none. Pleasant day, all well. Lud. Kauffelt here sewing. Paid Newcomer boot & shoe bill, $13.25. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1868 Was in town all day. Nice day. Load of lumber came late in eve. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1868 Was at home in forenoon. Afternoon drove out home. Mary, Dannie, and Harry were along. Very warm today. All well except Cordie is not well. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1868 Was in town all day. Pleasant day. Got a crew about 9 o'clock to unload boat at 18.00. In yard all day, very warm. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1868 Was in town all day not doing much. Got all the lumber out of boat this eve. Stoner is not well satisfied with it. Neither am I. Very warm. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1868 Was fixing up around the kitchen forenoon. After went to Columbia to get a music book for Cordy. (Jm) and cloudy day. Gave Bill Levergood $10.00 on shoe bill a/c. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1868 Was out home best part of day. Killed small beef and a hog. Cold, windy day. Brought my meat in in afternoon. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1868 Was round the house the best part of the day. Made sausage and cut up my meat today. Had George Budding. Tolerable nice day. All well. Bentz was here tuning the piano. Paid him three dollars. The river is over McConkey wharf. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1868 Was in town all day. Pleasant day. (Strote) day received note in bank of 300. Paid $50. on drew my dividend $110.00. Wash Burg & wife were here. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1868 Was at home all day, in church in eve. Very pleasant day. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1868 Was at York today. Went up to collect some money. Cloudy day. Business dull and money scarce. Banks don't discount. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1868 Loadened car for Getz. Cloudy day, cold. Commenced raining late in afternoon. Paid my school tax, $21.40. We gave out note for $1,000 to Culver & Barber for 90 days from today. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1868 Was in town all day. Not much dong. All well. I have a bad couth and pain on my left breast. John Fitz is poor, supposed he has consumption. Was in to see him today. He had a bad cough. Paid Bounty (an A borrough) Tax, $39.10. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1868 Pleasant day. Sam'l Kauffelt & self were out rabit shooting. Seen two only and got them both. Rabits are very scarce. So is all kinds of game. No partridge. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1868 Was in town all day, at home all eve. Rained and very disagreeable all day. Snow mixed with rain in afternoon. Very ugly day. Paid 15.00 towards getting a fire engine in Columbia. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1868 Stoner bought a small raft. River up but not very high. Cold and cloudy. Raft has 9 platform at $13 per m. He pay all expenses except towage and half (quantity) we pay. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1868 Harry & self were out at Rude Strickler's for dinner. Intended going out home when we left home but I got ear ache and it got cloudy and had snowstorms, that we came home directly after dinner. Was at home all eve. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1868 Had ear ache all day. Father was in, brought walnuts and took Cordie along out. Cold, rough day. Not doing much. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1868 Was in town all day. Had ear ache all day. Nice day. Not doing anything. Boat load of lumber came. Also got a raft of Hemlock (Forr) & c. Today and commenced drawing. Mr. Lane came in from the West. All tolerable well. Paid 1.80 J. J. Lane's lumber. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1868 Was in town all day. Rained. All well. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1868 Thanksgiving day. Was in town all day. Not doing much. All well. Pleasant day, a little cool. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1868 Was in town all day. Not doing much. Very pleasant day. Father took Harry out home. All well. River pretty well up. Carpenters put up arch at first span of bridge on this side. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1868 Mr. Lloyd, Leber, & self were out rabit hunting a few hours. I shot one. Rabits very scarce.
