Tuesday December 21st 1869 Snowed most all day, not very cold. In town all day. Mary was baking cakes. Dull in all trades. Money borrowers pay as high as 12 per cent. It is a blessing to be out of debt. My dear children, never get into debt if in your power to keep out of it. Live up to this advice: " Pay as you go." Take for your Motto and live according to your income, never above it, but invariably below as far as possible. Make no show or vain boasts of anything you have got. Riches often take wings and fly out of reach. One dollars saved is two made. Be purely honest in all things. Attend well to keep your own business and never trust to anyone to do your business for you. There are many rouges in sheeps clothing and very often people of high reputation and preachers of the Gospel. Trust no one better than yourself. Put all your important transactions in writing, even with the best of friends. Avoid all difficulties and Law Suits. Never say anything disrespectful of anyone. Keep your tounge well guarded. Please all you cannot, but always be on the right. Wednesday December 22 1869 Was in town all day. Nothing doing, all well. Mary is Baking cakes. No girl, the Nigger left.
