Mr. Beidler married Mary Elizabeth Bahn in 1859. At the beginning of 1873, their children were Cordelia (12), Harry (11), Daniel (5) and Elmer (2). Mr. Beidler's daughter Cordelia was my mother's grandmother. My mother's maiden name was Helen Edith Frey (nee Edith Helen Frey). The Beidlers lived in Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, a small community on the Susquehanna River. Mr. Beidler owned a lumberyard. He reached 37 years of age on this February 10th. I have reproduced his diary as faithfully as possible. My primary aim has been to preserve the flavor of the diary without distracting the reader. To do this, I have altered his use of capital letters and added punctuation. The day and date headings appear here approximately as they appear in the original diary. I made this transcription to preserve his diary for his descendants, historians, genealogists, and anyone else who enjoys going back in time to a quieter, simpler world. Transcribed for Computer by Charles Douglas Wilcox for Helen Edith (Frey Wilcox) Longtin Christmas 1992 WEDNESDAY JAN 1ST 1873 Morning --- All well --- Evening Cloudy day, not very cold. Jno Heppenstall was here all afternoon. He was here for supper. Cold day, but not very cloudy. The ice running all day. Mary was at Jim's and in church in the afternoon. The ice is gorged from below Safe Harbor to Marietta. The river is high here. It moved some of my lumber piles and upset some. The backwater was almost up to McConkey's warehouse this morning and the ice moved some of my large lumber piles. The river above Marietta is not very high and not a great deal of ice running yesterday. The bridge is in danger. I intend to move some of my lumber as soon as the water falls. All well. SATURDAY JAN 25 1873 I was in town all day. Nice day but cold. Good sleighing. A great many Yorkers were down today to see the ice gorge. It pushed over a pile of pickets for me last night. Water was highest last night instead of night before. A great deal of my lumber is surrounded by ice and piles push off the foundations. A great many persons are afraid it will take the bridge if it moves again. I have never seen such a gorge in the river before, did not believe the river would fill up full of ice from McCall's ferry to Marietta, but it is really so. Water was falling today. SUNDAY JAN 26 1873 Tolerable nice day. Was in town all day. Very good sleighing. A great many people were in town today to see the river. Sleighs were running all day. John Danl. and Tho Gehley were here for supper. The river is falling slowly and the ice packed tight. Brubaker was here in the evening. Secret Orders are a curse to the country. I never belonged to any. A Many a man was broke and ruined by having too much faith in his Brother Mason. It was reported today that President Grant was shot last night, but later news contradict it. It appears there is nothing but murder and rascality going on in the world. Trust no one with money or business secrets or secrets of any kind. Man at best is a deceiver. Money is many people's god and the root of most all evil, but a good friend if properly used and appreciated. One dollar made honestly is two saved. A man without money has no friends; with it, a great many enemies. Please thy friends and deceive thy enemy by doing right. MONDAY JAN 27 1873 In town all day. A clear day but colder this morning and last night than it was thirty or forty years. The Mercury in my thermometer a little before sunrise stood at sixteen degrees below zero. The weather record of last Wednesday night indicates a colder temperature than ever was recorded here so far as I can learn, except a record by Edward (Chopen?) in York, in the year 1857, which were twenty-three degrees below zero. TUESDAY FEB 4 1873 Foggy in early morning, clear and warm during the day. Snow melting fast. A very pleasant day. It broke in above the furnace and the water rose two or three feet in the stack house of the furnace. The water was at the Northeast corner of the furnace building. A great many people along the shore. It did not much damage to my lumber. The body of ice above the Bridge moved very little. MONDAY MAR 17 1873 Father, Dr. Rewalt & self were in the office all night watching the ice, but it did not move at all during the night. Cold windy night. Ice froze along the shore. A large body of ice is gorged in the river from furnace out across the river about 5 feet of a regular raise of water in the river at Williamsport. River is not high here except what the ice keeps back. Clear day but cold winds. Cordie and Barbara went to A. Heistand's in noon train. Our girl Mollie Posey left today for good.
