He served 12 months, mostly in Canada. At the expiration of 12 months, he enlisted again under Captain John Mayers at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of the 4th regiment of the Pennsylvania line under the command of Colonel William Butler and General _____ and that he continued until about January 1781 when he was discharged at Trenton in the state of New Jersey by order of General Wayne, and that he was in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Springfield, Monmouth and in _____ ______ ______ ______ ____ ____ under General Sullivan…” Henry County, Kentucky, April 11th, 1821?, John Adams, aged 66 years: “He enlisted in York County in the state of Pennsylvania in the [company] commanded by Captain Watson in the 1st Pennsylvania regiment commanded by Colonel Arthur St. Clair, belong to the troops of General Sullivan, and met the troops belong to Gen. Arnold retreating from Quebec in 1776. He served this tour one year at Trenton, state of New Jersey, 1777 and again reenlisted for a term of 3 years in Philadelphia in the company commanded by Captain John Mayers belonging to the 4th Pennsylvania regiment commanded by Colonel Foutur? of General Anthony Wayne’s division of the Pennsylvania line, and that he continued to serve in said corps or in the service of the United States until the last of January, 1781 at Trenton in the state of New Jersey, and that he was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Springfield and was at the b___ at the Battle of Trois Rivičres, Canada, and one with the Indians at Chemung…” Following the schedule of items that he owned, John Adams stated that “I owe more than this to two men. I have 11 children, 6 boys and 5 girls. Three of the boys have left me and are working for themselves. Have no visible property but their clothing. Three of the boys and the five girls still living with me. The oldest boy at home is 13 years, the oldest girl 16. All the balance are younger than these two…” Margaret McGuire [his widow’s maiden name], was married to John Adams on the 13th day of April, 1798, in Shelby County, Kentucky.
