I then moved with my mother into York County in the state of Pennsylvania, where, in the spring of the 1777, I enlisted in the Pennsylvania line of the state troops. I belonged to the company commanded by Captain John Rippy and the regiment commanded by Colonel James Ross. I marched to Lancaster in Pennsylvania. When we arrived there, I was informed by Joseph Reed, forage master, that there was a driver wanted for one of the United States teams, and he, the said Reed, being acquainted with me, agreed to procure me that situation. Accordingly, when the officers called our names for the purpose of entering them upon the regular roll, the said Joseph Reed had my name entered upon his roll, and he assigned me the charge of a team during the continuation of the war. I was employed in hauling grain to the mills, flour and meat to the storehouses and commissary stores of the army until the summer of 1783, where I gave up the team at Lancaster and the said Joseph Reed procured me a discharge from the commanding officer, who signed my discharge. I left the service having been in the actual service six years. And in reply to the interrogations prepared by the War Department, and prpopounded by the court, the said applicant saith; I was born in Oxford Township, Sussex County, in the state of New Jersey on the 21st of August, 1763. I have no record of my age. I was living in York County, in the state of Pennsylvania. In the year 1795, I came to the county of Northumberland, and have lived in that, Centre, and Lycoming Counties in Pennsylvania ever since. I enlisted, as stated in my declaration. I do not recollect the names of any officers other than those listed in my declaration. I received a discharge, but do not recollect by whom it was signed. It is since lost… State of Pennsylvania, Lycoming County Personally came before me, the subscribed, a justice of the peace, Samuel Anderson, who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that by reason of old age and the consequent loss of memory, he cannot positively swear as to the precise length of his service, but according to the best of his recollection, he served not less than the periods mentioned below in the following grades: He enlisted in the month of March in the year 1777. He enlisted in the company commanded by Captain Rippy in the regiment commanded by Colonel John Ross (as stated in his foregoing declaration) when he was not but 13 years of age, and in the same month and year, I was enrolled as a driver of a Continental team under Joseph Reed, forage master. ?Note. I served in the capacity of a teamster driving a Continental team under said Reed for six years and three months and which service terminated in June 1783; and for such service I claim a pension, and further saith not. Samuel Anderson, sorn and subscribed this 7th day of April, 1833. In 1852, Nancy Anderson, daughter of Samuel and Blanche Anderson, signed a power of attorney for assistance in making a claim to any residue she may have been entitled to. She was aged 52 years.
