All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Nancy Poquette npoq@hotmail.com August 21, 2006, 3:11 am Pension Application Of The Widow Of Jacob Barnitz, Natl Archives Microseries M804, Roll #__, Application #W3066 York County, Pennsylvania, September 12, 1838, before me, George Barnitz, one of the judges of the Court of Common Pleas of York County, Mary Barnitz of the Borough of York of said County of York, aged 76 years: “That she is the widow of Jacob Barnitz who was an ensign in Captain Stoke’s company in Colonel Swope’s battalion of the Pennsylvania Flying Camp in the Revolutionary War, who entered the service in July 1776 and at the capture of Fort Washington on the 16th of November, 1776 was wounded and taken prisoner by the enemy under General Howe, and remained a prisoner until February 1778, when he was exchanged.” “She further declares that she was married to the said Jacob Barnitz on the 23rd day of September, 1784. That her husband, the aforesaid Jacob Barnitz died on the 16th day of April in the year 1828, etc.” Additional Comments: From a letter from the War Department to a descendant's written inquiry in 1939: Mary’s maiden name was McLean, and she was the daughter of Archibald and Ann McLean. She was married to Jacob in Work, Pennsylvania. Their daughter Rebecca was born October 16, 1790 and son Jacob was born on August 28, year not given. Photocopies of the Bible pages are included in the pension application. Jacob was born in York County, PA and was the son of Charles and Barbara Barnitz. He was wounded in both legs and suffered many hardships during his imprisonment.
