Halding, a Judge of the Superior Court of the state of Ohio, Anna Maria Calhoun, a resident of the city of Columbus in the county of Franklin and state aforesaid, aged 81 years…: “That she is the widow of Andrew Calhoun of York County and state of Pennsylvania, who served as a private soldier in the Revolutionary War, and that her said husband, Andrew Calhoun entered the army by enlistment in the year 1778 or 1779, and for during the war, and served in said Revolutionary War for the term of three years. She further states that from the great length of time that has transpired since she was married to her deceased husband, Andrew Calhoun as aforesaid, that she cannot state the exact time of year that she was married to Andrew Calhoun, but that she knows that it was sometime during the year 1792. She further states that she was married to the said Andrew Calhoun in the year 1792 as aforesaid in the town of York, York County, Pennsylvania by the Reverend Campbell of the Episcopal Church. That her name before her marriage was Anna Maria Ford, daughter of Major Ford, who was also a soldier under George Washington in many hard-contested battles as he always stated, in the Revolutionary War. That her husband, Andrew Calhoun died in the town of York, York County, Pennsylvania sometime in the year 1804 and at which place he was also buried in the Episcopal Church graveyard in said town. She further states for the satisfaction of the department to which this claim is submitted as aforesaid, that the legislature of the state of Pennsylvania had her case under consideration during the session of that commonwealth of the years 1839 and 1840. And that on the 12 day of June, 1840, the Legislature of said state passed an Act which was subsequently approved by the governor of said commonwealth, granting to the said Anna Maria Calhoun the sum of $40 as a gratuity and also $40 of an annuity during her lifetime in consequence of the military services of her husband, Andrew Calhoun, in the Revolutionary War and also in the Indian War, which annuity has been regularly paid to the said Anna Maria Calhoun by the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on the presentation of her proper order half yearly ever since the passage of said Act by the Legislature as aforesaid, and in order more fully to satisfy the Department of the Commissioner of Pensions of the justice of her claims and the facts in the case, she has procured and attached the same to this her application, an attested copy of the Act of the Legislature of the state of Pennsylvania, as referred to in this, her declaration, and in which act the said Anna Mara Calhoun is clearly and explicitly recognized as the widow of a Revolutionary soldier, which act, No. 244, of the session 1839-40 of the legislature of that commonwealth, is hereby appended, attested by the librarian of the state of Ohio…Anna Maria Calhoun, her mark. Additional Comments: It is stated in said claim that H. A. Rutter was her son, but there are no further data concerning her family.
