I believe he was in the war about 6 years.” “He was in the Battle at Long Island, at which engagement he was wounded through the body, or else at the Battle of Brandywine, not certain which. He was at both these battles. He was at the Battle at Staten Island and marched from thence to the White Plains by the orders of General Washington or General Putnam. He was also out in the Indian Wars. At one of the places up on the River Susquehanna called Shamokin, where he received a wound in the knee. He was at a place called the ‘Queen’s Palace,’ where he and his men took from the English and the Indians a large quantity of furs and other booty. He was also engaged in guarding the British at Camp Security in York County in 1781 or 1782 in York County, Pennsylvania, I am sure for 4 months and perhaps more. I knew of his services at that time.” “I once remembered many more particulars, but have now forgot them. I have frequently seen my husband’s commission and have had it in my possession until about 1831, when Robert Fulton (who is since dead) took it to Washington, PA, when it was lost, and I know not what has become of it. She further declares that she was married to the said Samuel Fulton on the 5th day of May, 1785. That her husband, the aforesaid Samuel Fulton died on the 13th day of May, 1821”…etc. From a letter written to a descendant, a commissioner of the Dept of War wrote the following: “You are advised that in the papers on file in Revolutionary Pension Claim W2783, Samuel Fulton, widow Catherine, the first name of Colonel Smith, soldier’s father-in-law, is not shown.” “Said papers show that one of said Catherine Fulton’s sisters married Robert Gemmell who was living in Hopewell Township, York County, PA in 1844, and another sister married a Colonel John Kelly, and that all 3 of the sisters were married by Rev. John Slemmon of the Presbyterian Church in Chanceford, Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania. The names of said Catherine’s sisters are not shown…” From another letter, we learn the following: “That Samuel Fulton enlisted sometime in 1775 in York County, PA, and served one year as lieutenant, and served the balance of the time as captain of the Pennsylvania troops, length of service about 6 years. During this service he was in the battle of Long Island where he received a wound in his body, in the battles of Brandywine and Staten Island, capturing 15 Hessians in the latter battle. In 1779 and 1780, he fought against the Indians on the Susquehanna and was shot on the knee at Shamokin. In 1780 and 1781 he was in North and South Carolina under General Greene in the Battles at Hanging Rock, King’s Mountain, Cowpens and Salisbury. From August 1781, he was at Camp Security New York [should say York County, PA] for four months or longer.” “Soldier died May 13, 1821 in Washington County, PA at which time he was in his 71st year.” “He married May 5, 1785, Catherine Smith, daughter of Colonel Smith.” “She was pensioned by special act of Congress, August 5, 1848.” “In 1844, she was a resident of Washington County, PA, aged 82 years.” “Their son, Robert Fulton, was living in 1831, but died before 1844. A son, a Presbyterian minister, was referred to in 1839. One Samuel Fulton, a Presbyterian minister, made affidavit in Allegheny County, PA in 1844, on behalf of the widow. A grandson, Samuel G. Fulton, was a resident of Taylorsville, KY in 1845.” This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 4.4 Kb
