That he served faithfully for that period and that he is a citizen of Pennsylvania, is from his reduced circumstances, in need of assistance from his country for support. That he is about 75 years of age. That his discharge was sent to the Pennsylvania legislature to enable him to get relief from said state, and that he cannot now find it, and further, he saith not.” 13 April, 1818. York County, Pennsylvania, July 31st, 1820, Joel Gray, aged 77 years: “In Colonel Hartley’s regiment, being the 11th regiment, Pennsylvania line in the company commanded by Captain Bush, from the month of October 1778 until April 1st, 1781…One chest at $1.00. I have no trade and am so very weak and sickly as to be unable to work at any business whatsoever. I have no children or friends to give me any kind of assistance.
