That he faithfully served the said period of his enlistment and 4 months over in said company when he was honorably discharged on the 24th or 25th day of September, 1778. That he was in the Battles of Trenton, Brandywine, Princeton, Germantown, Monmouth, Stony Point, and various skirmishes. That his said discharge was signed by Colonel Harmar, and this deponent kept his said discharge, but his house was afterwards unfortunately burned and his discharge with it…” March 18, 1818 Westmoreland County, District of Pennsylvania, February 27th, 1821, Alexander McClain, aged 79 years: “That he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: That he enlisted at Lancaster, Pennsylvania for 3 years in Captain Doyle’s company, commanded by Colonel Hand in the Pennsylvania line. That he was placed on the pension list the 20th day of March, 1819, etc…” “Schedule of property: 2 beds and bedsteads Dresser and household furniture 6 sheep 1 yearling calf “Said Alexander McClain says that he is a weaver to trade. That he is totally unable to do work at his trade. That his wife, Margaret is aged 73 years. His youngest son, Mathew, aged 19 years resides with him and is the only help he has.” Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, July 15th, 1839, Margaret McClain, aged 84 years: “That she is the widow of Alexander McClain who was a private in the Pennsylvania line during the Revolutionary War. That he entered the service at an early period during the war, but that she is unable to designate the year. That he enlisted for 3 years or upwards, and that, at that time, he resided on Marsh Creek, then situated in York County, in the state of Pennsylvania. That he served, in all, about 4 years. He belonged to a company commanded by Captain Doyle of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was engaged in the Battles of Brandywine and Monmouth and was wounded in the action at Paoli, and was also in the action at Germantown, according to the information received from the deceased by this declarant, he ____ the Jerseys along with the American Army and was present at the capture of the Hessians..” “…That she was married to the said Alexander McClain sometime in the month of November in the year 1781 at Stickel’s Township in the County of Lancaster by a German clergyman whose name this declarant does not recollect. The declarant further states that her husband, the said Alexander McClain was discharged from the army the summer before their marriage in consequence of ill health caused by wounds received, as before mentioned, and those wounds was in his left side, and remained open for many years. That her aforesaid husband, Alexander McClain died on the 1st day of February, 1826, in the Township of Unity, Westmoreland County, PA…” “December 14th, 1839, Mary Nicholls, a resident of Unity Township: “That she has known the above named Alexander McClain and Margaret McClain, his wife since sometime in the year 1793, when they first came to Westmoreland County. They had, at that time, a family of 5 or 6 children, and that they settled and resided on a farm adjoining this deponent’s in Unity Township, owned by a Mr. McClain? [McClure?]. That some time in the fall of 1793 or 1794, the house in which they lived was consumed by fire, and the deponent remembers well to hear Alexander McClain say that all his papers in relation to his military service as well as his family Bible, were at that time consumed…” The family records of births and deaths have been torn from the family Bible and are available as actual photocopies of the handwritten records on this microfilm. Samuel, born in 1793 Thomas, born in 1975, married in 1816 David, born in 1797. Esther and Margaret, born in 1799, Margaret married in 1816. Matthew, born in 1802. The names of the following grandchildren are shown: Ephraim Smith born in 1817 Alexander Smith born in 1818 John McClain born in 18__ Margaret McClain born in 1818 Ester McClain born in 1818 Ester McClain born in May 4, 1834 Robert McClain born in September 30, 1835.
