He was in the Battle at Three Rivers, and was taken some days after by the Indians and carried to Montreal, and from thence to Quebec.” “In the spring of the year 1777, he enlisted with Captain Bush (he believes) in the regiment commanded by Colonel Hartley, who had been his lieutenant colonel before. This last enlistment was for 3 years or during the war. He was in the massacre at Paoli, and at the Battle at Germantown, and was then marched up the Susquehanna, and was shot though the body at Chemung town, and was then brought to ?Sunsbury [?Salisbury] in the fall season in the year 1779…” Fayette County, Pennsylvania, John McDowell, 2nd, aged 64 years: “That he enlisted under Captain Moses McLean for one year, and afterwards under Captain George Bush under command of Colonel Thomas Hartley in the 11th regiment of the Pennsylvania line for 3 years or during the war. Was in the Battles of Three Rivers, Germantown.” “That the date of his original declaration was June 6th, 1818, and the number of his pension certificate is #9316, and that he is the same John McDowell, 2nd to which the above mentioned pension certificate was granted. And now, in pursuance of an act of Congress on the 1st day of May, 1820”, etc. “That I am, by occupation, a mill-___ maker…” Additional Comments: In 1820 he referred to his wife, Eleanor, aged 60 and his son, James McDowell, aged 17 years.
