His captain and many of the prisoners died. Her husband being sick at the time, did not eat of the bread, and he believed he escaped death as a consequence of not eating of the bread.” “That he said husband, Jacob Staley, marched from the County of York, State of Pennsylvania, but she cannot state the name of the place where he marched to or performed duty, neither can she name year or years he was in the service, but she recollects that whilst he was in the service, he was commanded by General Michael Swope. She must refer to testimony accompanying this declaration for the proof of the service of the said Jacob Staley, her husband as aforesaid.” “She further states that she was married to the said Jacob Staley 55 years ago. She was married in Shepherdstown, in the county of Berkeley, state of Virginia. She has no certificate nor any records of her marriage, etc.” The deposition of Daniel Staley, aged 68 years: “That he well recollects that Jacob Staley, his father, and Jacob Staley and Peter Staley, his brothers, was drafted and served a tour of duty in the early part of the Revolutionary War in the Pennsylvania militia and marched from York County, state of Pennsylvania, through the state of New Jersey to either Long or Staten Island, in the neighborhood of New York City. They were commanded when they marched from York County by two officers by the names of Peter Tritt and ____ Finley. He cannot state the grades of the officers. He does not know how long they served on this tour of duty, but he does know that Peter Staley received a pension from the government of the United States for the services performed in the aforesaid tour of duty.” “That Jacob Staley, having served out this first tour of duty, then entered into the Flying Camp of Pennsylvania (he does not know whether he enlisted or volunteered) and served a second tour of duty. That he cannot state how long he served on the second tour of duty, but he well recollects that in both tours of duty, he served nearly12 months, and that whilst in the service, he was taken a prisoner by the Hessians upon Long Island.” “He further testifies that his father and brother, Jacob Staley, removed from the state of Pennsylvania to Berkeley County, Virginia sometime previous to the siege of Yorktown in the state of Virginia and that Jacob Staley, his brother, volunteered and marched from Berkeley County, VA and served a tour of duty at the taking of Lord Cornwallis at the siege of Yorktown in the year 1781. He cannot name any of the officers that commanded in this last tour of duty, neither can he state how long he served in this tour of duty. He states that in the first two tours of duty, the said Jacob Staley served as a fifer.” And he further states that the said Jacob Staley was married to Barbara Staley fully 56 years ago. That the said Jacob has been dead 35 or 40 years, leaving the said Barbara Staley a widow…” This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 4.2 Kb
