That he marched from York with a Captain Thomas McAnary and Major John Finley to Philadelphia, thence through Brunswick, Princeton, Amboy, Elizabethtown and Newark to Banian [Bayonne] Town. [Bayonne, New Jersey was originally known as Bergen Neck, located south of Bergen, now known as Jersey City.] He had a brush with the British on a Sunday morning at Banian [Bayonne] Point and General Washington was there, and he had another brush with the enemy at Hurlgate Fort. He marched from that place through Jersey to Woodbridge, thence through Princeton and back to Philadelphia, where he was discharged by Major Finley the month of February 1777.” “He kept his discharge among his papers for some time, but at length lost it, deeming it of no importance he took little care of it. There is no one living that he knows of who can tell exactly how long he was in service, nor has he any documentary evidence of his service, and he knows of no record of his age. He lived, after his discharge, in the county of York in the state of Pennsylvania for about 18 months. He then moved to Virginia and settled on a tenement in the county of Berkeley, where he lived for about 41 years. He then moved to the county of Frederick in the state of Maryland and lived there about 16 years. He then returned to the county of Berkeley and lived there until the 26th of February last. He left Berkeley County on that day and settled in the county of Jefferson where he has resided ever since…” Jefferson County, Virginia, September 16, 1839, Margaret Staley, aged 69 years: “That she is the widow of Peter Staley…who was a private during the War of the Revolution… She was married to the said Peter Staley in the fall of the year 1790.
