BRIEF MENTION

H. A. Smith to-day moved his sale and exchange stables into his new stables on 
East Chestnut Street.  On Monday he will receive a car load of Ohio and Kentucky 
horses.

Colonel W. H. McLaughlin, of the Sixteenth United State Infantry, a native of 
York, has been retired from active service on account of disablility, contracted 
while in Cuba, which unfitted him for duty in the tropics.

The new path up Big Round Top on the Gettysburg battlefield, is a great 
improvement.  In the path there are 126 steps besides the slope in the path 
where there are no steps.  There are 101 steps on the tower.


LITTLESTOWN

Guy Harner, son of Mrs. A. E. Harner, of Lumber Street, has accepted a position 
in telegraphy on the Lake Shore road in New Jersey.  He entered upon his new 
duties this week.

Several buildings in town are being wired for electric lights.

Dr. E. K. Foreman is improving his property by erecting an addition to his house 
on East King Street.

Carter McCall, who had his finger caught in Martin's ice cream freezer and 
amputated at the first joint, is getting along nicely.


Burglars Big Haul.

The dwelling house of Henry Rife, a farmer residing in Conewago Township, near 
Strinestown, was burglarized on Wednesday night, and $1,000 in money and a lot 
of valuable private papers were stolen.  The thieves located their booty in a 
chest on the second story of the house and gained access thereto by means of a 
ladder.  Mr. Rife and wife occupied apartments on the lower story and were 
undisturbed.  Nearly every farmer in the township has suffered recently from 
raids on his chicken coop, and they believe an organized gang is operating in 
the neighborhood.
