A. Brown was very unlucky recently with his mules. One of them was kicked by a horse and the other one jumped over a fence and hurt his neck; he cannot work either of them at present. At the spelling bee held in Davidsburg on Wednesday evening, Nov. 8, 1899, L. A. Livingston was the champion speller; C. A. May was the champion speller at Trimmer's school house on Thursday evening of the same week. On Sunday, Nov. 19, 1899, at 10.00 a.m., Rev. Dietzler will preach for the Jr. O. U. A. M., of Manchester, Pa. The school board of Dover township met at the Davidsburg hotel on Saturday, Nov. 11, to transact business. Joel Gross and wife, of near Nashville, were guests of Mrs. Fickes on last Wednesday. On account of the inclement weather on Saturday evening, not very many people were about town. On Saturday night, Nov. 11, a visitor made his appearance at J. M. Leathery's. It is a bouncing young son. PERSONALS Postmaster D. A. Minnich left for Baltimore Tuesday morning. Mr. Wm. H. Souder, of West Market street, left for the Monumental city this morning. Contractor McGinnis, of Philadelphia, is spending a few days in York on business. Mrs. O. A. Williams is visiting her son, Councilman W. W. Williams, of North York. Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Rouse and Mrs. Margaret Stuck have just returned from a trip to New York. Mrs. Sarah Eberly and Miss Mary Smith returned from a visit to New York yesterday evening. Mr. Frank Nace, formerly of this place but now of Bridgeport spent Sunday with his parents on Walnut street. Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Carpenter have just returned from a week's visit to the Export Exposition, Philadelphia. Mrs. Rev. A. W. Lilly and daughter, of Mechanicsburg, are the guests of Mrs. George Reever, on East King street. Miss Lillian G. Simpson, formerly of this city, but now of Baltimore, is visiting her friend, Miss Phoebe D. Passmore. Messrs. Milo Glassic, L. D. Carpenter, Peter Goodling, Charles Goodling and August Myers left Monday morning at 4 o'clock on a hunting trip to the lower end of the county. Mr. and Mrs. John A. Pfaff returned home Sunday night from their wedding trip through the south. They will reside with Mrs. Pfaff's mother, Mrs. Henry Weaver, of 703 South Queen street. MARRIED KOLLER-ILGENFRITZ - At the First M. E. parsonage, by Rev. Dr. Ganoe, November 14, Mr. Martin L. Koller, of Seitzland, York county, to Miss Margaret M. Ilgenfritz, of Shrewsbury, York county. DIED GEMMILL - On November 14th, 1899, at 11:22 a.m., at her late residence, No. 203 North Beaver street, Sue M., wife of William J. Gemmill. LAU - On Monday night, November 13, 1899, from apoplexy, Mrs. Elias Lau, of East Berlin, formerly of Stoverstown, aged 70 years. AT THE Y. W. C. A. A delightful audience left the Young Women's Christian Association last evening, after listening to Mr. George P. Snyder describe his trip to Norway. He was plied with questions and so interested was everyone that after an hour had gone by and Mr. Smyser tried to bring the talk to a close, he was able only to do so by promising a like treat in the near future. HELD A BANQUET The Foresters and Wood Choppers of Court and Cabin York celebrated their second anniversary by a banquet and ball at the Knights of St. Paul's hall last evening, and it was attended by a large number of members and their wives. The banquet was prepared by Caterer Lew Waters. Mr. Harry Wills acted as floor manager for the occasion and the music was furnished by Wecker's orchestra. All present enjoyed a most pleasant evening. HIGHWAY MATTERS A regular session of the Highway committee was held last evening. Very little business of importance was transacted. The following members were present: Messrs. Immel, Small, Rohrbaugh, McDonald, Wilson and Chairman Fisher. The clerk was instructed to notify a number of property holders on North Newberry street to lay pavements according to city ordinance. Henry Hess was given ten days in which to lay a pavement in front of his residence, and if notice is not complied with the committee will have the pavement placed down. The city engineer was instructed to give a grade to several residents on Washington avenue. The following bills were approved: Pay roll.....$354.63 C. F. Dougherty....$1.50
