Lewis H. Diehl, of Sumner, Missouri, a former resident of this section, is making an extended visit to relatives and friends in this place and vicinity, this being his first visit home in 42 years. Mr. Diehl is the son of the late Henry Diehl, and was born in West Manheim township. When the Civil War broke out he served three years in Company I, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. In 1880, Mr. Diehl went West and settled first near Bedford, Missouri, where he lived 18 years. Later he moved into Charlton county, where he engaged in farming and blacksmithing. He retired from active work, on account of his age, a number of years ago. In 1874, he was married to Miss Nancy Brock, a Western woman, who died three years ago. He has two children, Arthur Diehl, with whom he resides, and Mrs. Mattie Bell Moore, of Sumner. The aged veteran was accompanied home by his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. George Hoover, of Goodland, Indiana, who have been home several times, the last visit being made seven years ago. They were met at Union depot by the only remaining sister in the East, Mrs. Kate E. Luckenbaugh, of 248 McSherrystown avenue. They will spend most of the Summer with friends and relatives in Hanover, Spring Grove and Lancaster county, and will also attend the veteran reunion at Gettysburg. Mr. Diehl is a staunch Republican and was a Taft supporter in the late campaign. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, June 28, 1913
