The hand of death was laid heavily on the family of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Easley, of 323 High street, when their daughter, Bernice May, aged 10 years, 2 months and 15 days, died of diphtheria Saturday at 9:30 p.m., and son Ruel Clinton, aged 7 years, 10 months and 10 days, died Monday morning at 1:30 o’clock. Several of the nine children of the family had been sick for two weeks, complaining of sore throat, but he parents thinking it only quinsy, administered home treatment until last Friday, when Dr. J. H. Bittinger was called in and pronounced the disease diphtheria. Nearly all of the children have been ill, and at this time two, Earl, aged 15 years, and Vera, aged 14, are in a serious condition, although hopes are still entertained for their recovery. Death is at all times a sad visitation, but at such a time when the family is shut in from the outside world, to lose two children in so short a time is indeed a heartrending affliction. The neighbors and friends, while anxious and willing to give help, are powerless to aid except through sympathy. The body of Bernice was privately interred in Mt. Olivet cemetery on Sunday afternoon, and the burial of Ruel took place on Monday. Rev. M. J. Roth of Trinity Reformed church officiated. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, July 27, 1912
