Gipe, one of the best known musicians of York, was seriously injured in an automobile accident along the Lancaster turnpike near Mountville, Lancaster county, on Sunday, when he was thrown from the running board of the automobile of James E. Chalfant. In some manner the automobile caught fire and Mr. Chalfant was slowing down so that he and Mr. Gipe could get out of the burning machine. Mr. Gipe started to get out before the machine was stopped, and on going over a breaker in the road, he was thrown falling on his head. At the particular time they were bound for Pequea, where they expected to take supper. The fire was extinguished by the use of sand from the road, after which Mr. Gipe was hurried to the Columbia hospital for treatment. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, July 26, 1913
