Samuel Hain, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal churches in the vicinity of Glen Rock, had his right leg amputated above the knee Wednesday, Oct. 23d. The operation was necessary on account of the leg being affected with gangrene and was performed in the York hospital. Dr. J. Fletcher Lutz with Dr. Charles H. Gerry, Shrewsbury, accompanied the Rev. Mr. Hain to the hospital. The infection was first detected in August and several weeks ago a toe on the foot was removed. Instead of this operation checking the disease, it seemed to spread the infection. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, October 26, 1912
