Ruth, aged about 12, and Cyrus, 10, found four of the caps in their father's mill at this place, and set about experimenting with them. Going outside the mill, the girl and her brother took one of the caps and began hitting it with a hammer to see what would happen. The explosion followed, tearing off the thumb on Ruth's left hand and part of the forefinger. Both children were cut about the face and hands by bits of stone. Dr. Vallie Hawkins of Fawn Grove was summoned and attended to the children's injuries. It was stated that the Lloyd family has no knowledge of how the dynamite came to be in the mill. It was not known that any of the explosive was in the place. The Gazette And Daily - Thursday, August 16, 1928
