Jacob March, of Washington Township, aged 87 years, has been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Spahr, at York, during the past week. Mr. March was born in Dover Township in 1816, and visited York for the first time with his father and his schoolmaster, George Croll, 80 years ago. When they left town to go home, Mr. Croll told the father of Jacob March that his son "might live to the year 1900." Another event took place at York of especial interest to Jacob March. On the 22d of December, 1840, he was married at York to Harriet Zinn, by Rev. Daniel Ziegler, pastor of the Reformed Church. This was 63 years ago, and both Mr. and Mrs. March are still living. They have two sons and eight daughters, all living and married and having families. Mr. March voted first in 1836 for Martin Van Buren, who was elected President of the United States that year. He was not quite 21 years old, but he voted on his size, being about six feet tall. He served on a York County jury 60 years ago, and many times since. For more than half a century he was a farmer in Washington Township. He retired a few years ago and still lives in that township, midway between Kralltown and Wellsville. He was for 17 years a School Director, 4 years Road Supervisor, and 2 years Tax Collector of Washington Township. When he entered the court house at York with a companion during his recent visit, he said: "Never mind the elevator. I want to see the stairs of the court house." So he walked up to the third floor without getting tired. When asked whether he still worked on the farm, he said the last thing he did was to pick winter apples, but the trees were so loaded with fruit that the limbs hung low enough so that he could pick them from the ground. He said: "I hope to get home before all the corn is husked. I want to help. I always liked to husk corn ever since I was seven years old, and that was 80 years ago."
