Headlines: "Happy Packs His Trunks; At 61, Clowning's Hard Work"
	Happy the Clown has made his last public appearance.
	
	Happy is 44 years old and has appeared in circuses here since 1917.  His retirement
was ordered by 61-year-old Clarence (Hap) Roland, 133 West Jackson street- the man under the
makeup, who says the character has become too strenuous for him.

	Roland's career began when he was 17 and worked two years for Ringling Brothers,
Barnum and Bailey Circus as a professional clown for a salary of $75 a week.

	After his two-year stint of traveling with Ringling Brothers, Happy got married and
confined his clowning activities to volunteer guest appearances with circuses that came to town,
and to performing at public events.

	Early in his career he performed a balancing act with tables and chairs, but
dropped the routine after breaking two ribs in 1947.

	Happy's last public guest appearance was staged Aug. 7 at the Eastern League
baseball game at Memorial stadium.

	Roland retired in 1958 after 35 years as a mail carrier.  He carried for 14 years
in Elmwood, where he was unofficial "Mayor" and 11 years in the 100-block East Market Street.

	Roland is married to the former Alene Seitz of Stewartstown.  The couple have two
children, Mrs. Norma Moore, Loganville, and C. N. Roland, Ridgewood, N. J.
