Newspaper clipping from Cramer family files, York Heritage Trust, in Cramer obituary collection, Handwritten date on clipping 1933 -------------------- Mrs. Sarah Ellen Ayres Mrs. Sarah Ellen Ayres, wife of Rev. A.R. Ayres D.D., retired minister of the Pennsylvania Conference, died Sunday 24th at her home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was aged 77 years. She was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. W.H. Craumer. Her father was a well known United Brethren minister who preached in the Pennsylvania Conference for a quarter of a century. She began her Christian life and joined the church at Dallastown, Pennsylvania, while yet in her teens. All of her people on both sides of her family were United Brethren. These facts concerning her parentage and early life make possible an understanding of the enduring loyalty, sympathy and intelligence with which she entered into the customary duties of the itinerant preacher's wife when she was united in marriage with the Rev. Ayres. For more than fifty years her lovely presence graced the home and her faithful assistance aided her husband in the difficult labors of his ministerial life. Her refined Christian character made for herself, her husband and the church, many friends wherever it feel their lot to serve. The ill health of Mrs. Ayres made necessary their retirement from the active ministry in 1923 and since that time she was a faithful member of Grace Church, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Although unable to attend the church services during the past several years, she nevertheless retained a remarkable interest in all phases of its work, and the support which she gave to it by means of her influence, offerings and prayers are unsurpassed. As the church bells were calling the faithful to worship on Sunday morning, September 24th, her spirit quietly slipped over the threshold of her home to join the immortal throng in the worship of God before the great white throne. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. I.S. Ernst, assisted by Reverends E.C.B. Castle, S.G. Sherriff, R.E.V. Shannon and J.H.Ness. Reverends R.R. Rodes, J.A. Shettel, H.W. Zuse, M.R. Fleming, L.W. Lutz and G.C. Daugherty served as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Home Cemetery at Dallastown, Pennsylvania. Mother Ayres, as she was often called, gave to her family and to the church the beautiful example of a faithful, devoted Christian life. Her children, and her many friends throughout the entire church, rise up and call her blessed. written by I.S. Ernst.
