York, June 20, 1870

On the 13th, Hammond, son of Mr. Emanuel Bates, aged 10 years, was drowned in 
the Codorus, near town.  The body was not found till Wednesday afternoon 
following.  Mr. Bates had only one year ago, four healthy children.  On the 
Fourth of July last, one of the boys had a finger blown off; about the middle of 
last July, another was scalded to death; a week or two since, another injured 
his hand in Farquhar's Machine Shop; and now this boy loses his life by 
drowning.  Our whole people sympathize with this unfortunate family.
