He was aged about 80 years. “Marty” Burke, as he was more familiarly known, was an interesting character, who will be recalled by many of our older residents. He lived in Hanover and vicinity for about 30 years, earning a livelihood as a wood-sawyer. It was his boast that he sawed many hundreds of cords of wood, and only gave up his occupation when an affection of the eyes developed about ten years ago. At this time he was taken to the Wills Eye and Ear Hospital, Philadelphia, for treatment, but the experts found that nothing could be done to save the aged man’s sight, and he has been blind ever since. He was admitted to the county almshouse, where the best of treatment was accorded him. Mr. Burke was born in Carroll Co., Md., and has a step-brother, Perry Rumbler, living at Westminster. Several nieces, nephews and cousins of the deceased live in McSherrystown, Littlestown and Hanover. The remains were brought to Hanover Sunday and funeral services held in Trinity Reformed Church at 2 o’clock, Rev. M. J. Roth officiating. Interment was made in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
