All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/york/ _______________________________________________ William Eckenrode William Eckenrode, of York, died at his summer home at Pen Mar, Sunday, September 15th, after a sickness of about four weeks from Bright’s disease. Mr. Eckenrode had been complaining for almost a year but was taken suddenly sick last Wednesday night. He was aged 62 years, 9 months and 9 days. A native of Adams county, Mr. Eckenrode removed to York city about 36 years ago, during which time he was the general agent for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance company, of Philadelphia. He was a son of Aloysius Eckenrode, a farmer of Adams county, and was born near New Oxford, Dec. 6, 1849. While still a young man he took up the work of public instruction and taught for two consecutive terms in Mt. Pleasant township, Adams county. Some time later he became an apprentice at the printing trade in the office of the Gettysburg Compiler, where he remained for a period of three years. He later accepted a position on the Congressional Globe, of Washington. After quitting the printing trade Mr. Eckenrode launched forth in the insurance business, first representing the Massachusetts Mutual, of Springfield, Mass. On May 10, 1876, he was appointed agent for Schuylkill county, for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance company, of Philadelphia, with offices at Pottsville. In 1882 he was transferred to the York agency and later became general agent for both York and Adams counties, in which capacity he was engaged until his death. Mr. Eckenrode was married in York June 5, 1882, to Miss Catherine Elizabeth Klunk, youngest daughter of ex-Sheriff Jacob Klunk, of Adams county. Surviving are his wife and the following children: David M., Mary G., Pauline C., Marguerite T., William M., Jr., and Catharine E. Eckenrode, all at home. Surviving also are two brothers, Dr. Charles E. Eckenrode, Gettysburg, John W. Eckenrode, Lancaster, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Rindlaub, York Springs, Adams county, and Mrs. Joseph A. Goulden, York. Funeral Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 9 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic church, interment in St. Patrick’s cemetery. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, September 21, 1912
