John Eckert, a retired farmer, aged about 60 years, disappeared from his home in Warrington Township, last Wednesday. A search was made for him and his disappearance was rapidly becoming a mystery which caused a sensation in the neighborhood. Friday evening, his dead body was found in a piece of woodland near where he resided. The remains were rapidly decomposing. By their side was found a rope which had been missed since his disappearance. All indications pointed to strangulation, which was the verdict of a jury of inquest assembled by Justice Gratz. The deceased had been a victim to liver and heart troubles, and despondency is said to have caused the rash act. He was a veteran of the war of the rebellion, and is survived by one son, Curtis Eckert, a storekeeper near York Haven. Evening Herald, Hanover, York Co., Pa., Monday, May 8, 1899
